The Church Missionary Society was founded in 1799 by a small group of laymen and clergy of the Church of England. It was originally named the Society for Missions to Africa and the East. Samuel Marsden (1764-1838), pioneer clergyman, farmer and sheepbreeder, first reached Australia in 1794. He served as a chaplain in New South Wales from 1794, based at Parramatta. He built St. John's church and a formidable and thriving farm.
